numerical usernames, and which release?

Hi I want to use numerical usernames, but imapd and pop3d doesn't recognise them, however deliver does (and mailboxes with alfa's in it work fine). Is it possible to use them? (Our students have all numbers, so it would be nice to let their account name be their student-number...) Thank you, Pau
