How do I index salvaged directory tree

Apparently reconstruct doesn't do this now. I salvaged a user's directory tree from a disk that was going bad, moved to to a new server, and copied the files and directories in. Now I don't seem to have a way to get at the files through a mail client, except for the top level (that indexed f
