you can try lowering the buffer_pages to 2.. seems to work fine for us, and
we only show 20 messages by default

no it doesn't happen when using the default theme, but If dimp is inheriting
css from horde, what css attributes can I modify to account for the larger
font sizes I use?

I think i'll just make two (nearly) identical horde folders.
one for dimp, and one for imp.
and force redirects to one or the other on their mailbox pages,
and delete/replace the theme folder with the default theme on the dimp one.
