[ilugd]: modem driver not working

I am trying to set up a motorola sm56 internal modem on linux 7.2 and had got the driver rpm file from a pc quest cd. The /dev/modem file has been set up by the installation to point to /dev/sm56 Even after installation the modem does not connect through kppp or RH ppp dialers . the message is
