http://www.gzip.org/#faq10 says otherwise. Is that not the gzip that
is shipped on the distro?

you can also extract it like this
tar -xzvf filename.gz
By default this will extract the files in the current directory, if u want
files to be extracted in another dir then use -C option
tar -xzvf filename.gz -C /path_to_dir
