There is a recent APAR (OH49573) that addresses an issue with SDSF being
started before CMF and it should mean that you should not have to restart
SDSF/SDSFAUX in order for subsequent availability to be recognised.
RMF returns 79-1 records even when its address space is down, so the SDSF DA

hi rex,
yes we have those utilities.
But as far as your other questions, I have no idea. I am not a storage systems
guy.
I think what I was after is the "dump" and "restore" commands.
thanks

both those options fail for me. The IPLINFO displays some info then fails at
"Call SPLIT_IPA_PAGE". The SHOWZOS is not found.

As a z/VM sysprog independant contractor for 30+ years, IMHO this is not a
question that can be definitively answered.
The term sysprog has an extremely wide set of standards. For example, a sysprog
from blue's GS division is typically an installer, customizer, data gatherer,
etc. only for zOS

Amdahl's last CPU development effort at Andor Systems and I developed and

As an MQ developer, I was at a customer who was interviewing contractors
for a couple of MQ positions. We asked a couple of good meaty open ended
questions, and listened to how they answered it. Some guys had good
qualifications but little experience and tried blagging their way through.

Everyone,:
Brian Western, who is active on this forum, did some of the coding on SDSF
in its infancy when he was still a teenager. He has a good story to tell
about it if you can get it out of him.

I like what it's become of course, but I sometimes wonder why. Are they
trying to be something like Omegamon?

Our current product trajectory is to compliment both Omegamon and RMF rather
than attempt to replace either.
I see SDSF as a system information toolkit rather than a performance monitor.
SDSF does not have the richness of data that Omegamon captures and does not
really step into the thresh
And just to be clear, I wasn't complaining. This stuff is super helpful
and I think it started in SDSF long before Rocket got hold of it.
Another one (again no complaints) is the PDS command which has various
functions unrelated to a PDS. It's like the most popular programs have

Bill,
Dump and restore is a different animal. Dump creates a backup copy in DFDSS
format so it will NOT use flashcopy because it has to reformat the data into
the DFDSS format. Restore takes the dump file and rebuilds the original
dataset. COPY is what will use flashcopy if you're set up for
I remember, and remember using the output TSO command to sysout.

I think you guys are mixing up being productive after the first day with being
able to take everything over and run the site by yourself. And remember this
isn't a test, it's just asking for our personal opinions of our personal
experience. There are all types an levels of systems programmers,
That indeed is the crux of the matter. When we were advised by the
incumbent outsourcing the backlog of work that is urgent would take so long
to deliver we suggested we could add additional staff. To which the
response was it would take at least 6 months for even an experienced
systems programmer
No. And I once saw Werner Buchholz (z"l) posting on this list; I'd be surprised
if anybody here goes further back than him.

I've been able to be productive on the first day for things that didn't require
institutional knowledge, but I've never picked up all of the non technical
things anywhere near that quickly. I've also never taken as long as 6 months.
But if the installation is a real mare's nest, all bets are off
