Are there any other error messages? It does work for me, so there are
probably other error messages that lead to a failure to evaluate the
custom modul

Running
$ export GUIX_PACKAGE_PATH=~/Guix
$ echo $GUIX_PACKAGE_PATH
produces "/home//Guix". The file is saved as
"/home//Guix/custom/packages/variants.scm".
Then running
$ guix package --install lilypond@2.18
or
$ guix package --verbose --install lilypond@2.18
produces only that one error: "guix
