I believe you are correct - file_select only has meaning for copy_from
promises. Actually, more accurately it works for any promises which
support depth_search. It turns out that edit_line in *not* compatible
with depth_search, you will get these errors if you try:
!! Recursive depth_searc
As per the original post, there was no server as the copy was local
dir to local dir. This bug is very reproducible in 3.0.4 - however has
been fixed in 3.0.5p1 so can be considered closed.

Sounds like the source could not be accessed. What does the verbose output
reveal? Are you using a server process? If so, what does it report?
