I would like to understand what is the advantage of a custom groff driver
rather than using the ghostscript driver for that printer on PS output.
KX-P1123 is a Matrixprinter. with ghostscript you can only use a "default" mode.
Adding the correct sequences to groff will give the opportunity to have the
right
sequences in the output.

For example, you can't access the built-in fonts.
