I think the RFC you mention is more a "reply" protocol, rather than an "echo protocol" with a "total algorhytmus" utilized by this. A RFC has to be written still. Anyone? It s still a good research project for students. The TTL seems to be replaced by bounces in the latest lib according to lib-SVN.
