I run gnucash 4.5 on ArchLinux and compile gnucash from the sources. Yesterday
I wanted to upgrade/install gnucash 4.8 by:

I prefer to save my data at the end of the day resp. at logout. The
.bash_logout script copies the gnucash file(s) to an NFS directory offered by a
a raspberrypi-type computer serving as back-up server. Thus, the main
gnucash-file(s) remains as-is and the up-to-date backup is on another

Alternative is to use a database (mysql, postgres, SQLite) and e.g. libreoffice
as GUI frontend for reporting/dataretrieval. Clearly, still some basic SQL know
might be required.
