Ok so just to clarify are we saying the 2.6.16 can be updated to 4.8 directly
or do I have to update to 3.11 first.
I accept that I cannot have all three installed at the same time. I think that
I can retain all the data files and 2.6.16 installation files and revert if
necessary unl
I would add one thing to David's excellent instructions below. Each time
after upgrading and open a fata file for the first time I would recommend
using Actions->Check & Repair->All transactions. This is just a failsafe in
case there is any problem with a change to the schema.

You might do better to upgrade to 2.6.21 first, then to 3.11, then to
4.8. And run the check-and-repair pro

Gyle, yes thank you I considered that and did set the correct start and end
dates and also thought to look to the PREFERENCES of the entire program and
there is a place there to also set the start and end dates and select if they
are RELATIVE or ABSOLUTE, and I chose the latter. I’ll change to

Thanks everyone. It looks like I should try upgrading to 4.8. I didn't realize
that the official Ubuntu 20.04 repository provides 3.8, and that the
ppa:sicklylife/gnucash repository is at 4.2. So one more question: do you
recommend the flatpack approach, or attempting to compile from source?

I just use flatpak on linux as it's so easy and there's not much chance of
user error :-) You might want to double check the flatpak limitations re

Perhaps something was lost in translation. When a transaction has an
embedded price Gnucash assumes that it is a purchase or sale and the price
is exact for that trade. Quotes are generally assumed to be estimates,
therefore somewhat soft like newspaper quotes.
