I had to reboot my MacBook Air. This caused my Gnucash application/program file
(is that the correct description?) to be deleted. I had to re-download the
application. Did I do something wrong when I re-booted?

I am on version 4.4 and find that the "Reports / Experimental / Income
Statement (Multicolumn)" report is very useful for time based totals.
By default it looks like a simple Income / Expense report but in two
columns. Go into the Options and pick one of the Period Durations:
