This brings up the idea that it might be worthwhile to change the default

The Notes field is quite useful. I see a fair amount of requests for extra
fields. I wonder how many don’t know about it. I also wonder how many people
use each view option. Do most just stick with Basic and Single Line?
As I noted in the other thread, I didn’t discover this option until about 4
Can you review primarly the help part of the docs and create a pull

I will elaborate a little to report that while I prefer the double line
view, there are probably enough users of single line view that it should
still be readily available. I also find myself frequently switching
ledger view on and off and filter and sort options depending on what I want

Frank, you caught me flat-footed, as I have had tips turned off for years.
I will need to turn it back on and watch a few of them to see how other

Here is my suggestion. If someone wants to improve the syntax, go ahead.
To change the register view to show the Notes field in each transaction
select 'View' in the menu bar and check 'Double Line'.

Can I suggest some indication of why one might want to use the Notes
field? Until this thread I didn't even know it existed. (And I'm still
on 2.6.19 also. I figure I'll upgrade directly to 4.0.)

Since I use the notes field in almost every transaction, I cannot imagine a
reason not to use it. I suppose one way to state it would be payee goes in
the description and why or how goes in the notes. Since it is arbitrary
text, use your imagination. When users import transactions from financial
