I am having a problem with my gnucash. After a restart after a power outtage
gnucash will no longer connect with an older .gnucash file. Is there a way to
recapture old data?

I think the best answer to your question would be whatever provides the
most direct route from your source to GnuCash.
That may also change when you migrate to release 3.2 or later of GnuCash.
