What works for me:
- check the boxes 'Placeholder' and 'hidden' in the account properties. By
that, the hidden accounts are excludes from the drop-down list when selecting
accounts for transfers
- create new namespaces for securities (i.e., 'stock expired') and assign no
longer used securities t

I'm not sure what you're talking about; hiding an account doesn't make the data
unrecoverable, it just hides it from view if you tell GnuCash not to display
hidden accounts. As Fred suggests in his reply elsewhere, in View->Filter
by->Other, you can tell GnuCash to display or suppress h
Click the top right triangle.
That should get you a list of about 28 column headings.
Click on Hidden
Then go thru your accounts and click the H column to hide
the ones you do not care about anymore.
Also, at the top, click on View.
Then click on Filter by...
In the popup you get,
