Double clicking the titles is far easier, but the manual should be complete.

The double click did it for the balance column - thanks all. I was
trying to do it by pulling the left edge over, and it just mucked up
every other column. The other columns did have grab-able edges, so I
did not expect the balance one to be different.

Grabbing the right-hand border of the Balance Column and dragging it right or
left still works, at least on MacOS. That assumes that one can drag right, of
course. If the GnuCash window is on the right edge of the monitor, as is the
case in fullscreen mode, then there's nowhere for the pointer t
The real problem comes if you use the program on two different monitors
with different resolutions and/or different default text sizes. In one
case you will want extra space to the left so that it is still ok on the
other monitor. Double clicking doesn't leave extra space on the left.

When did that change? in release 2.6.19 you can still adjust the balance
by moving the right edge of the title.

Every column except the description can be adjusted by grabbing and
dragging the right edge with the mouse. The balance column is a little
harder to do that way, but the double click method usually makes an
acceptable width.
For the Description drag the right edge left until the horizontal scrollb
