I've researched this further and it could well be a Windows issue. I am
using Windows 10 Build version 17134. Released April 2018, mine upgraded
this week.

Note, the ‘lock up’ is really that the main window is waiting for input in the
(hiding) save window.
The only other question left is, “Is that window hiding all on it’s own, or,
are you clicking in the main window area instead of directly in the save dialog

Create Invoice > Print > Export PDF
The save window flashes up and then disappears. Program locks up.
If you do something else like open a browser then go back to Gnucash the
save window comes back.

Work Around for me. Create new folder location it opens to, then select that
folder to save the file to.
