Using Ubuntu with gnc 2.6.17
In Edit/Preference/Account/Default currency/USD
The accounts are mainly in USD except for some investments in EUR with a
parent account in USD.
However, the grand total amounts shown in Account tab are in EUR.
Why?

If you are using the multicurrency example from the guide I am sure is not
going to work

No, it seems there is no way. Advance portfolio applies always the same
exchange rate to basis and value. (I am trying to understand the trading
