You can set double-line mode globally in Preferences>Register Defaults.

I know you can set double-line mode on a per account (per register); I do
not know if you can make it global. There certainly is no way to do it
"per transaction".

register when you select a transaction it will
open displaying all splits on subsequent lines. The firts line will be the
