Clint,
I use a home made spreadsheet to track lots if I really need to for tax
purposes, but here in the US brokers are supposed to do that for us, and we
just need to be confident that they are doing it correctly. Also, they are

the broker-derived assessment of gain because of it. With individual stocks,

Hi David,
That wasn't Mark. I was trying to duplicate what he had done first on my Linux

close the first before opening the second and didn't reopen the register after
changing the register preferences in the
first case.

Since Mark had the same file open simultaneously on two machines, the

If one or both are still crashing, he should try to find the trace file as

Updated to 3.6 on the Windows 10 box and with the same preference setting the

David,
I think you're confusing View>Double Line with View>Basic/Autosplit/Transaction

Clint,
You canhandle existing investments in the same manner you handle an existing
bank account which has a balance when you start. You will have a credit
entry to Equity:Opening Balances to match the debit entry to the account in

Mark,
Your description of the process you are using doesn't sound correct to me.
In Double line mode you would need to enter the date and description. There
is no place to enter an amount and no Split command available here. At this
point you would either have to hit Enter to open up the line fo

That worked! I renamed the data file and "saved as", then closed on my
desktop. I then opened the same file from Dropbox on my laptop and
accessed ok from both computers with no problems now. (closed file on
computer before opening on other of course).
Thanks so much for your help!

I'm in double-line view on a checking ledger.
I enter the date, description, and amount. Then I click split.
I enter the amount for one of the split items, and click to choose an account.
GnuCash completely stops and closes with no information. This is reproducable.

GnuCash will re-open the last file you used. So that's not a problem.

MYM, unfortunately, does not rigidly enforce the double entry aspects of
financial recording. As a for instance, 401(k) contributions from my
paycheck would not automatically transfer to the account; I've had to
manually adjust the cash balance of the investment to record the
contribution
How did you handle your investments? I can see starting afresh with
standard transactions, but investments can live and have records for
decades (capital gains/losses, etc.).

Trying to set up a brand new set of accounts to use postgresql as the
backend.
Following the new file instructions in the tutorial, when I use SaveAs,
my only option in the dropdown box is 'xml'.
What do I need to do to have gnucash add a postresql option to this
dropdown?
