I’m pretty sure it was a patch due to be included in 3.4.

If all the transactions are in only one account, start your Edit > Find
>Number > Contains ... or Edit > Find > Number > Matches Regex ...
operation from that account register. If they are in several accounts,
start your Edit > Find >Number > Contains ... or Edit > Find > Number >
Matches
Do a ‘Find’ and use Number as the field to match.
The result will be a register showing only matching transactions, you can then
run a ‘register report’ from there.

I used somebody's advice and put in a text string in the 'Number' field
for certain transactions of interest, say "xyz".

I have weird input issues too on Debian buster, especially around selecting
text. ctrl-a doesn't select all the text in a field for instance.

That was a bug on certain releases that has been fixed. You didn't
indicate what version of GnC you are using nor did you say which O/S or
hardware. Without that info it is impossible to determine whether your
issue has been fixed or if it raised its ugly head again.
