did a prefix build of what's in gnucash-2.3.17.tar.bz2 from sourceforge,
like so:
./configure --enable-dbi --prefix=$HOME/gcunstable/2.3.17
then make; make install
then ./gnucash in $HOME/gcunstable/2.3.17/bin
--no splash screen;
--"save as" seems to work correctly, both as xml and as sqlite3,
