Cleaning out the installation directory and running 'make install' again
worked.
I'm just surprised that it worked with R15316.

I tried it with a complete new download of R15316 and that seems to work
(at least it doesn't crash at startup). After that I tried R15317 again
with the same result as before: It crashes at startup.
Both times I completely removed my source directory before downloading
the two versions.

Like I said, 15317 worked for me just fine on FC5.. What configure options
do you use?
