Had to hack "configure" to allow it to complete

This may be a problem with autoconf, and not GnuCash. But anyway ... Using the 1.5.2 that's in CVS, and the latest Gnome stuff from Helix, I did "autogen.sh", and saw this: checking for gtk_html_new in -lgtkhtml... no configure: error: Cannot find gtkhtml. See the README for more info
