Hi John,
I had the same thing, getting an empty white/greyish screen when
enabling to show icons on the desktop in shell 3.10 - Mageia.
For me it helped to set a background wallpaper instead of the default,
it did not immediatley work out but after a few tries and a few
login/logouts it showed th

This behavior is expected. The code in Nautilus to draw a background image was
ripped out around the 3.8 cycle, I believe. I'm surprised it can still draw
icons.
