So, after recompiling and upgrading the c compiler (which I needed to
do anyway) to 5.3.0 gnome now works again -- yay. I have no idea as
to what was the problem, which is scary in a certain sense, but I will
be glad its working and go on maybe to actually use it!

So, I downgraded the at-spi2 framework from the git to 2.20.1 for the
atk and 20.2.2 for the core, but still no joy. Any way to monitor the
events via the text console to see what is happening or why its not
happening?

Are you able to get into Orca's preferences and navigate around?
