I did that. I found out I need to log out and in after creating /etc/orbitrc.

As far as I can tell, none of the distros are providing a package of the
java access bridge for GNOME. I believe some folks are running a JVM
that they have obtained from somewhere

The Java Access bridge is only needed if you want access to Java apps.
You don't need it for basic access to Gnome.

I'm trying to install java-access-bridge on Fedora core 4. Since it
odesn't seem to be happy with the installed java version, I've
installed j2sdk1.4.2 from Sun. After doing this, I'm able to run the
configure script of java-access-bridge without any problems.

the java-access-bridge, and made the new synlinks.
I ran gnome and tried the notepad demo that ships with the jdk, and it
worked pretty well.
