f the pixel to affect its weight in the
gaussian blur, use the selection weight of the pixel.
Does such an option exist? Maybe it's worth trying to alter one of the
existing gaussian blur plugins to behave like this?

Hugin (http://hugin.sf.net/) is useful if you need to exactly align a
number of images prior to any stacking. It can also be used to remove
chromatic aberation with a little care (although it's fiddly and time
consuming).

but this smudging is closer to camera shake.
I can always resort to IRAF or AIPS++ if I have to, but the GIMP is so
much easier :-)
