I am experiencing a problem where if I try to print an image on a 8.5 x
11 page with 1/2" margins it gives me a 1" margin on the top and
squishes the image to fit. If I scale the image down I still get the 1"
margin at the top but the image is not distorted. My printer is an HP
Deskjet 9800 a

TIFF is another good option, however the Wikipedia entry for PNG says it
uses a type of lossless compression. Have I missed something here? I
am very curious to know the answer as I have started to save my
completed photographs as PNG because I thought there was no penalty for
doing so.

probably should look at imagemagick. It gives you lots of control and
is great in scripts if you're doing bulk operations. An extensive set
