Actually it's not that easy, because the film contains a mask (yellow &
red), which has to be filtered out.

I am simply trying to get an area I select active so I can fill it, copy
it, remove it, add it to another picture.
If I use the path tool, it is not working. even if I start gimp from
scratch, and make a new area, it is still shown with the no entry sign!?!?!

a new GIMP release has been uploaded to ftp://ftp.gimp.org/pub/gimp/
GIMP 2.2.14 is a bug-fix release in the stable GIMP 2.2 series. There
are no new features in this release, but quite a number of bugs have
been fixed:
- avoid crashing on newer versions of the winicon format (bug #352899)
