Forgot about this. XCF is gimp's native format. Save as XCF and it
retains your various layers.

manipulating the threshold - perhaps increasing it.

manipulate using the freeform selection tool and then selecting the
option/tool "Select by Color" and manipulating the threshold -
perhaps increasing it.
