there is a later version of GIMP but I think that this may just be a
case of GIMP and KDE not interacting well and there may be a setting

i have downloaded cvs version. but after compilation it doesn't brush
outline during painting. This says http://developer.gimp.org/NEWS it
should work

Make sure you have "Show Brush Outline" turned on in the preferences.

the way to go is to turn off alt actions on KDE.
Do this:
launch kcontrol, click in 'look and feel'-> window behavior->actions
and on the bottom pane, where it reads "modifier key + left button",
change the action to "nothing". Apply, and happy gimping!
