I'm just trying to learn the Gimp - I'm running version 1.0.4 that came with
Mandrake 7.0, and I'm running on top of KDE. My version of the Gimp comes up
without a status bar (the area under the canvas which has information on the
cursor coordinates). I read "Grokking the Gimp", which claims you c

Get Gimp 1.2.x, the book used the devel Gimp that now is 1.2.x.

Your best bet is to get the latest Gimp - 1.2.1 as of this
writing. I'm not sure if the coordinates were even implemented
in 1.0. And Grokking the Gimp is based on 1.1 (now 1.2), so it
contains a lot of stuff that you will not find in 1.0.4.

I recently compiled and installed gimp 1.2.1 on a RH7 Intel system. I have a
bunch of tiffs that were sent to me that I can't use. Initially I had no
problems but all of a sudden I hit some TIFFs I can't convert to JPG.
