Finally - one I may be able to answer ..
Try scaling the image close to the size and resolution you expect to print
_before_ you add the text. I believe the text is essentially bitmapped
onto your image when you add it. If your printing implies a substantial
enlargement you may be looking at th

I tried adding a scanner for GIMP use on a linux system, but the sensor
was not useful to me. Now I get a warning the sensor isn't available each
time I start the GIMP. How can I suppress the warning or remove the test
for that scanner?

You'll have to check for yourself. I use it with Pentax DSLR raw and I
recall it accepts others but I only looked as far as the camera I have.

Thanks for your earlier note -- I am quite happy to stand corrected and
your post suggests a basic experiment I can easily do: compare in-camera
processed and post-processed RAW images for the same scene and settings.
I'll have a limited sample to work with: my only camera delivering RAW

Wiser heads will probably correct or refine this, but ...
The 'raw' file is supposed to represent data very close to what is
provided by the camera's sensor array.
Before saving images in non-raw formats (JPEG, etc.) the camera performs
some conversions of the image field as well as -

In my present v-2.2 installation, the active tool is set as a paintbrush
when I open a file. I would rather have something different. Can I set
this default? If so, how?
