OK, the question normally stops at removing the color, my mistake for
not adding the next step
create a new layer
fill the layer with the desired color
move the layer to the bottom.

Right click on the image
Go to Colours
Then Color to alpha
make sure you select the white and you are done

Hi Martin,
Thanks for your response. It's a little unclear to me how you
determined which libs needed to be moved out of the way. Can you
explain with a little more detail how you found out what needed moving,
and where you moved it to.

So you think that the older gimp version that I am using is the issue?
If I had a newer gimp version, it would work just fine?

The original was cropped so that was a tiny snippet of a large tif.
