Well, you've got your work cut out for you on the frizzy hair guys, but I've
had some success using Filters->Colors->Decompose for frizzy haired
individuals. Go with RGB separation. I then pick the layer with the best
contrast between the hair and the background and massage that into a mask.

The Select Colour tool isn't really supposed to help you in this fashion.
The Palette dialog does not help either as I do not wish to change my image
into another colour palette. There does not seem to be a way to import my
images' colour palette into the Palette dialog, and thus be able to edit

to remove the background so I can copy/paste the persons into another
picture.
But how do I do that when the background contains a lot of coulors -

Indexed colour palette of an image?
I was able to see a colour table Dialog in GIMP, where I could edit RGB values
and add an additional colour. But I couldn't see anyway to remove colours or
lock them from being removed
