I realized I did not make the most important issue clear. I want it 3D in both directions...not just top to bottom (which even I can do) but also tapering towards the tips. So it really looks as if it is rounded at the ends as well as fat in the middle. Sorry for the lack of clarity.

I am afraid you've hit a design issue with the GIMP -
when adjusting colors via tools, i t simply operates on the whole
image for each preview step.
The options let to you right now are workarounds:
Either select a small part of the image, preview on that part, hit
cancel, select all

Well, they kind of do (in that, if the GIMP were 16 bits per
channel now, it would have been in the release notes). The short
answer is no, we aren't.
