I downloaded and installed the fonts you're talking about on my
RH-6.1 system, getting them from the debian site, and, once I
got my font servers to find them, they seem to be working fine
on with my GIMP. (1.2.3), even with the old text tool,
I'm afraid I can't duplicate your prob
