I have seen similar on a couple of systems. Work fine with kernel
2.6.16-r13 but fail when upgrading to 2.6.17-r4.

Well, I was lazy so I just enabled 'mad', which allowed xine to play
mp3s for me. However, to get amarok to play mp3s I still had to
re-emerge ffmp
