Apologies for starting the top posting,
I had earlier suggested using
http://www.tecmint.com/gentoo-linux-installation-guide/ and the Gentoo
handbook side by side.
The link provided has the option of using the LiveDVD. I do not know at
what stage the install failed but it might be easier to start over.
Regards
Joachim
There's always this
http://www.tecmint.com/gentoo-linux-installation-guide/ with side by side
reference to the Gentoo handbook.

Why? I have them in make.conf.
So this particular version of OO will use old linguas and will not
recompile. And if new version arrives it will be compiled with new LINGUAS.
Set linguas for this version of OO in
/etc/portage/package.use
?

I think you can safely remove the orphaned folders, because anything that
needs the kernel source to compile, does so with the sources contained
within the folder that the /usr/src/linux symlink points to (make sure
it points to the kernel you're currently using).
Check out /lib/modules for orphane
Why not just use quickpkg from gentoolkit and make a backup of the installed
version of openoffice before installing the new one?
Doing so enables you to revert the change easily without any ebuild hacking.
