Over the years, I've came up with a method of updating my system and

That's the biggest reason I have portage's work directory on tmpfs. If
I start having to do it on a disk because of a lack of memory, I'll do
it on spinning rust to save my m.2 stick.

P. S. What is LTO and should I enable something? I already need to
reboot soon for a newly rebuilt kernel. May as well do both.
There's not a lot of difference. One thing, there is likely other
packages compiling at the same time tho. I have mine set to do several
at a time.

Grasping at straws here. Could it be that it was built against one
version of python but another is now installed and active, and not the
one it is built against?
I looked at the USE flags on my system. The only ones are for python
targets and test, which us lowly users don't use. The only problem that
I can think of is a problem with python version.
Another thought. I have made the switch to python 3.13 but have other
versions installed for a few packages that need them. This is what I
show for what python is selected.
root@Gentoo-1 / # eselect python list
Available Python interpreters, in order of preference:
[1] python3.13
[2] python3.12 (fallback)
[3] python3.11 (fallback)
root@Gentoo-1 / #
If you still on 3.12, it may show it as selected, not fallback. Anyway,
checking that and seeing what the system is working with might give a
clue. Maybe. It's another straw at least.

sure how to
fix that. Basically, portage stores data on what is installed in /var

thinks one thing but the truth is something else. I suspect emerge

Do you have a link, or several links, on how to set that up? I'd like
to read it and may even play with it on one of my old rigs, then maybe
on my main rig at some point.
OP sure is getting a lot of options. :-D

a kernel process. I'm on
gentoo-sources and this is uname -r. 6.9.10-gentoo
Thoughts?

The data is secure tho. You may want
to look at how people set up their laptops to prevent theft and see if
that would work in your case. Really, that's kinda what you want to
accomplish even tho it is a desktop and not so easy to carry off.
I've also read that some super secret gov't laptops have a lot of
security built in. That may be something else you can look into if you
really want to lock down a puter and your BIOS supports that sort of
security level.
Just a couple thoughts that may help.
