you still have these questions after explanation... so probably the
best way is to review http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/kernel-upgrade.xml
(nothing special - it is just a first one on google search).
Already done that, thanks!

Q1. Can someone please have a look (and perhaps comment) on the above?
Q2. Kernel upgraded from hardened-sources-2.6.16-r11 to hardened-sources-2.1.18
during the above process, can one use the old .config file to compile the new
kernel?

Automatic upgrades like this isn't safe.
Thanks! Won't do that again!
Complete recompilation of toolchain needed not every 6-9 months, but only
if one of toolchain packages was upgraded (and I think if just revision
(-r) number was changed then toolchain recompilation isn't necessary).
Anyway,
Q2. Kernel upgraded from hardened-sources-2.6.16-r11 to

The iptables options changed a bit in 2.6.18 and make oldconfig will not
pick up a some of the iptables stuff.
Thanks! The server

Hi,
Tried this gt1 # use emerge -1 -pv #the number one not the letter lower case L?
But received the help summary:
"Usage:

Hi!
I have some problems enabling the nx bit on my VIA C7. First i
thought, the Kernel might not know that my processor supports that,
but it shows up in /proc/cpuinfo. So... where do i have to enable
(and use) it and how can i check if it is enabled (and used correctly)?
Thanks,
Hi!

Just did the following to upgrade a system that was built about 6-9 months ago:
emerge --sync && emerge os-headers glibc binutils gcc && emerge os-headers glibc binutils gcc && emerge -e system &&
emerge -e system && emerge -uD world && emerge --update --newuse --deep --buildpkg world && emerge
I was upgrading my kernel/patching it with grsec the other day when
all of a sudden I couldnt su as a normal user anymore. I dont know how
this would apply considering the new kernel wasnt (and still isnt)
booted yet.
when attempting to execute 'su' as a normal error I get these grsec logs
