Your manual build will hit missing dependencies, write them
down. You then will have to construct a working ./configure line with
all the right flags, write that down. Etc. If I (or some other dev)
looks at that list, we'll have some basis of writing the ebuild.

I wrote a long blog post and I'd like to see it on planet gentoo. I

Not just you, but many sys admins out there in the real world are in
similar situation. Again we can move forward on this but not without
backwards compat planning.
