There's no commit in almost a year and no one seems interested in reviving
the community.
It could still be used/forked by academic researchers but looks like
Apache's not the best home for the project.

A while back ago during one of the Apache board meetings, it was discussed
that they wanted to open up the streaming platform used by ApacheCon for
Apache projects to organize virtual events, because they pay for a whole
year's subscription only to use for the few events (ApacheCon).

Quickly glance through the project doc and looks like it's an active

The Apache Livy (incubating) is a similar project offering REST API for
Spark. HBase has REST API through its Thrift server. Hadoop has YARN REST
API and WebHDFS REST API.
