Sounds like you need to change the grid even smaller, since "that small amount
was the new grid, right?
Grid snap stops you from moving to in between places. It's doing it's thing is
all.

How do you try to pick the components? Can you give the mouse actions?
What happens if the "pick does not work"? Nothing? Or do you pick the
wrong component?
