The wiki references both $HOME/.geda and $HOME/.gEDA.
H, I (or somebody) will have to investigate and fix this.

As for where to put the files, perhaps this will clarify things:
Settings you want to apply to all your designs (as a user) should go
I put gafrc in $HOME/.gEDA

I don't have an answer, just a question as I am in a similiar snafu.
Where does gafrc belong. I am having better results putting it in
$HOME.
