Oh, I suppose I should mention that I ran into this because I was using ccache
to compile Emacs with --enable-gcc-warnings, and by default ccache runs the
preprocessor and the compile

Oh, hmm ... looks like you're right: I was looking at the wrong function in
objdump -- possibly because the functions somehow came out in a different order
in the object file from the source file.
