This is fixed in mingw CVS. I will add the workaround with SHRT_MAX. It might
not be very efficient, but at least it's garanteed to work, and I think we'd
better be on the safe side.

This one is scary. I add Paul T to the Cc list (since he's familiar with
namelist). As far as I can tell, this looks like a purely library-side problem
(the code emitted by the front-end looks fine).
