I recently installed freesurfer 7.4.1 on a Debian 12 system (using the
Ubuntu 22 .tar.gz). When running recon-all, I get the following error:
-bash: /opt/freesurfer/freesurfer-7.4.1/bin/recon-all: cannot execute:
required file not found

I also see this error which is sent to stderr:
/usr/bin/time: cannot run recon-all: No such file or directory
It seems to be something related to the time command (or bash keyword)

installer and not use the tar file (which is not an installer) ?

I did not see that message, which is why I posted again. Sorry about that!
I will try using the package installer. We're using the .tar.gz method
because it is located on a shared drive, but maybe we'll just need to
install it locally if that works.
